UCC Diversity Subcommittee

General Procedures for course reviews

All proposed courses, whether existing or new, must meet either the criteria for the US Ethnic Diversity requirement or the criteria for the Global Diversity requirement, as articulated at: http://jan.ucc.nau.edu/academicadmin/Diversity.htm

The subcommittee reviews courses for the diversity designation only. Courses should be submitted through regular course approval channels. The subcommittee can review courses simultaneously with other curricular groups, such as UCC and Liberal Studies.

·          The subcommittee considers courses that have at least 2/3 diversity based content to meet the primary focus threshold of the above definitions

·          Each proposal will be considered for one category only as indicated on the proposal form

·          Each course proposal must be submitted with a completed cover sheet. This cover sheet should bear the signatures of the department/program chair/director/coordinator and the dean of the college. The cover sheet and the criteria pages are available on the Associate Provost’s web page at: http://jan.ucc.nau.edu/academicadmin/Diversity.htm.

·          Each proposal must also have an accompanying syllabus and catalog description. If necessary, the catalog description should be revised to reflect the course’s diversity focus.  If the catalog description is revised to reflect the course's diversity focus, it needs to be submitted through the proper channels. The diversity subcommittee will consider it at the same time as UCC but only when it has been approved by the college curriculum committee.

·          The syllabus should include enough evidence to allow the subcommittee to review the course. This can include a tentative reading list that evidences the 2/3 of content noted above

·          If the proposal is for an existing course and is being submitted without significant modifications, the proposal can be sent directly to the subcommittee.

·          If the course being proposed is a new course or a course that is substantially modified to meet the Diversity criteria, the course should also be submitted as a “new course proposal” or a “course change proposal” through the appropriate levels of curricular review. In such cases, the Diversity Course Submission form should also be included in the package.

The committee will review the documentation we receive and communicate our decision with the contact listed on the cover form and UCC.

Petitions

The student or advisor submits petitions that address the above guidelines for diversity coursework to the Office of the Associate Provost for Academic Administration. The Associate Provost will ask the diversity subcommittee to review the petition documentation and vote on whether or not the course meets the diversity requirement. The subcommittee usually does not discuss these petitions. If the voting from the subcommittee are mixed, the Associate Provost will bring the petition to the subcommittee for review.
