Assistive Technology for the Home:  Resources for Older Adults and Individuals with Disabilities

As individuals age or become disabled, mental and physical changes may influence their ability to live as independently and productively, as they would wish. A lessening or loss of strength, balance, visual and auditory acuity, cognitive processing, and/or memory may affect the way they are able to function at home. Living at home can be made easier with the use of assistive technology (AT) devices. The increased independence afforded individuals who use AT may ultimately result in their being able to remain in their homes for longer periods of time with reduced concerns for safety. Many of these devices are inexpensive and easy to obtain, but the general population’s knowledge of AT devices is poor. Consequently, individuals who are aging or disabled are not living their lives to their fullest potential.

A broad range of devices and strategies are available to assist with cooking, cleaning, storage, personal care, and safety. Listed below are examples of AT devices and solutions for making the home safer and more comfortable.
