The Technology Access Center of Tucson, Inc. (TACT)

TACT is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, grassroots organization which incorporated in 1993 and opened its doors in March of 1994. TACT provides information, training, exploration, assessment and access to assistive technology (AT) for people of all ages with disabilities. At TACT, individuals with disabilities have access to training and education regarding the adaptive equipment and assistive technology tools that will assist them in the vital activities of learning, hearing, seeing, speaking, playing, moving, recreating and writing.

Mission

The Technology Access Center of Tucson, Inc. (TACT) is committed to empowering ALL persons with diverse ability through the use of technology. TACT provides individuals with disabilities opportunities to explore technology that may enhance their independence, communication, productivity, recreation and social interdependence according to their individual needs and interests. TACT strives to accomplish this goal by providing easy access to conventional technologies, assistive technologies, related services and information resources so that individuals with diverse ability have opportunities to become informed consumers and users of technology.

Services

TACT provides the following services for individuals with disabilities, family members and professionals:

  • The Guided Exploration - Guided Explorations focus on the individual’s or small group’s questions, problems, goals or issues concerning AT. Within the Guided Exploration process, TACT gathers expertise to work with the individual, family members, and professionals. Hands on exploration is provided. TACT staff performs individualized research and advocacy as needed.
  • Assessments
  • Assistive Technology Training on specific topics as requested
  • Access to the Internet, the World Wide Web and ABLEDATA
  • Internet Overview and Training (web, e-mail, search engines) for all ages
  • Cross-platform Assistive Technology Learning Lab
  • Community Presentations and AT Overview/AT
  • Awareness on specific topics
  • Center Orientations - 20 to 30 minute tour of TACT
  • Information by phone
  • Individualized resource packets
  • Informal browsing and independent exploration time
  • AT advocacy and self advocacy information
  • Connections to a network of resources and expertise
  • Equipment recycling and refurbishing
  • Adapted Toy and Equipment Lending
  • An assistive technology book, video, vendor catalog collection
  • Demonstrations of AT and AT Vendors “Show and Tell” forums on a wide variety of AT topics and products
