The UDI Online project at the University of Connecticut will be hosting a FREE webinar "Applying Universal Design for Instruction to Online and Blended Courses: An e-Toolbox for Faculty".  During the free webinar, the project team will

• Produce an overview of Universal Design for Instruction (UDI);
• Outline the needs of students and faculty in online and blended courses;
• Explain the development of an e-toolbox for use by faculty in the planning of a course, delivery of course content, and/or assessment of student learning;
• Discuss several e-tools (for example, Adobe Acrobat, Doodle, Voice Thread, Jing) within the e-toolbox, highlighting their strategic uses within a postsecondary course to addres the various learning needs of students.

Description: The goal of this focus session is to revisit the potential of blended learning instructional models, student learning outcomes, and successful implementation practices. The maturing of online learning practices and engagements has opened new possibilities for curriculum design, including both face-to-face and online learning opportunities. The ability to design a course that uniquely blends face-to-face and distributed interaction allows institutions to address learners’ specific needs and customize the learning environment rather than rely on a “one size fits all” approach. But these options lead to a variety of questions:

• What’s the right mix of face-to-face and online?
• How do you decide when to employ an online activity or interaction?
• How can you best map the mix of blended elements to student needs and requirements?
• How can these elements be orchestrated to meet a course’s learning objectives?
• What are the strengths and weaknesses of various online techniques and methods?

Join us September 15 and 16 for “Blended Learning: The 21st-Century Learning Environment,” the 2010 ELI Online Fall Focus Session. Hosted inside an Adobe Connect learning environment, this virtual event will be much more than your typical online seminar. You’ll exchange ideas and collaborate interactively with the ELI community—all without leaving your campus. You’ll also receive all the resources and guided activities you need to help frame discussions and organize team events locally in your department, college, or institution.

During this two-day online event we will

• Revisit the status of blended learning today—what we’ve learned and how this instructional approach continues to evolve to support learning across many disciplines
• Create a framework for the successful design and deployment of faculty development for blended learning
• Explore successful implementations of blended learning across different types of institutions
• Reflect on the potential for blended learning to promote critical thinking, student engagement, and success
• Consider assessment strategies for blended learning, both at the course and program levels
• Identify the role learning technologies—synchronous and asynchronous—can play in blended learning
• Engage in dialogue with a community of professionals focused on how to design and deploy blended learning across the curriculum

Faculty, course designers, technology specialists, and other educational experts will lead discussions about innovative technologies and techniques for connecting students with course content, and with each other while facilitating assessment of their learning. You'll walk away with new ideas to help you design and teach courses that will engage your students while increasing your own efficiency.

During this showcase, we will look at how pedagogy has led the evolution from Course Management Systems (CMS) to more dynamic Learning Management Systems (LMS), Personal Learning Environments (PLE), and Open Learning Networks (OLN). By Fall 2010, the NAU community will decide on a replacement for Blackboard Vista, our current learning management system. This showcase explores some alternatives.

The morning sessions include descriptions of some new teaching resources for faculty, and Drs. Chih Tu and Michael Blocher of the College of Education will describe how they have extended a traditional CMS for an Open Learning Environment by using free and open social networks. In the afternoon, we will offer a preview of the new Blackboard Learn and Moodle, two tools being considered as possible solutions for NAU's dynamic teaching environment. During Fall 2008 Showcase: Tools and Approaches, four one-hour faculty-led panel discussions will focus on incorporating some of the latest learning tools and approaches into your classes, such as podcasting through iTunes U; digital image, video and music databases through Cline Library; online evaluations; and supplementing in-person courses with online learning.

Videotaped sessions are now available (see watch videotaped sessions link). You may need to download and install the Silverlight application to view the taped sessions. Also, PC users should view these sessions with Internet Explorer. Mac users can use both Firefox and Safari.

Teaching with a classroom response system, "clickers", not only engages students through interactive lectures but also helps faculty exploit just-in-time learning opportunities through individualized question answer sessions.
