ETC 657: Technology Planning and Professional Development

Credit Hours: 3
Format: Online
Semesters Offered: Fall and Spring
Prerequisites: ETC 547 and ETC 567

The following is a brief description of the course, the course policies, as well as information about the textbooks needed. The course will begin on the first day of instruction of the scheduled semester. Students registered for the course will have access to the class beginning on that date with their dana account information.

Course Description

This course uses the International Society for Technology in Education Standards and local, state, and national technology plan guidelines to prepare technology leaders for planning, writing, assessing and maintaining district and school-based technology plans. Topics include instructional program development, staff development, facilities and resource management, acceptable use policies, managing the change process, and grant writing.

A field component is required that has students interact two times during the course with a small group of educators in a local school or district. You must have access to such a group to succeed in this course.

The course format is designed to be taught online through Web-based instruction. Students will be expected to participate in the online learning community as described in this syllabus. That means the course should be completed within the semester timeline.

There will be online group assignments, usually completed through the online conferencing center (Discussions area). In this course, group work will be used 1.) to clarify your thinking through talking and writing, 2.) to test your ideas against other students, 3.) to appreciate new perspectives, and 4.) to practice group-communication skills which the content and context of this course seems to call for.
