Educational Technology Program: Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I transfer courses into this masters
degree?
Yes, but only if they are transferred to substitute the core courses (curriculum, research, psychology, and foundations). You can transfer 9 hours if taken within the past 6 years, and with the coordinator’s, the department chair’s, and the Graduate College's approval. You must be admitted into the program BEFORE completing a Petition to Transfer Credit form (link to this petition from the left panel).
- Students admitted before fall 2006 were able to transfer credits for Ed Tech and elective courses into the program; why isn't that possible anymore?
Before preparing to earn national recognition through NCATE/ISTE, we had 15 program outcomes for both the Certificate and the Master's; we also had room for two electives in our master's program of studies. However, students completing the Certificate are expected to meet the 75 standards of the NCATE/ISTE Technology Facilitator (you can get more information about what this means if you visit the link on the left menu). When students finish the master's program, they are expected to meet a different set of 75 standards to be nationally recognized as Technology Leaders (there is another link on the left menu that will take you to the NCATE/ISTE site to learn more about this recognition). As a consequence of having to meet 150 standards in total, our master's program will not have room for electives.
- Can I still transfer ASSET courses to substitute some Ed Tech courses?
Due to the strict standards and procedures that need to be met to earn national recognition through NCATE/ISTE, students admitted into the program from fall 2007 and on will not be able to transfer any courses to substitute Ed Tech or elective courses.
- Are the Ed Tech courses self-paced?
No, courses last a full semester and you are expected to interact
with your instructor and other students in your class during all semester long. Assignments deadlines are set inside each course.
- Is the program completely online?
Yes, all ETC coursework MUST be taken online; core courses
may be available face to face, and may be taken online or face to
face.
- Who do I contact if I am interested in getting
more information?
Email the Ed Tech Coordinator at edtech-coordinator@nau.edu If you do not get a response right away, please allow at least 48 hours before resending your message.
- What if I want to apply to the MEd in Ed
Tech program?
Visit the link on the left called Application. It will guide you through the process of applying to either the Certificate or the Master's program.
- Can I substitute technology courses I have
taken for ETC coursework?
Usually not. We require that you take all Ed Tech courses from
the ed tech faculty at NAU.
- If I enroll in the Certificate Program and then decide to continue with the Master's Program, will my courses be counted for the master's?
Yes. All of the courses in the Certificate Program (15 credit hours) are transferrable to count towards the 36 credit hours of the master's program.
Questions? Feel free to contact the Educational Technology Program Coordinator at edtech-coordinator@nau.edu.
