Endings and Beginnings

Spring is here with new life pulsing everywhere. As the sun melts the snow around us and the seasons change, we also change. Graduation is coming soon, marking ends and beginnings, transitions and explorations. For those of us that are graduating, change is on the horizon, bringing endless possibilities for new beginnings. For those of us that are still working on our degrees, the new growth will hopefully bring new ideas, new questions, and new paths to resolve them.

Independence: Change has definitely come to GSO. Throughout this semester we have been working on a plan to become an independent organization. We hope to accomplish this by the beginning of the next calendar year. We formed a special committee within the GSO to take on this task. The committee has met three times since it was created in our February meeting and has been working on creating a constitution to become the foundation of an independent GSO at NAU. We have been working with ASNAU and the Graduate College to make this transition as smooth as possible. As we transition into this new phase, we hope to accomplish our goal of having every graduate program represented at all of our monthly meetings, in order to be a better advocate for the needs and concerns of the graduate student community at NAU.

New Officers: Our period of service as executive committee has come to an end, and we are very happy to announce the four newly elected executive officers that will be responsible for running our organization the next academic year. Please join us in welcoming Sheena Kauppila (M Ed Counseling-Student Affairs), president; Athena Hagerty (MS Clinical Speech Pathology), vice president; Moussa Tankari (EdD Curriculum and Instruction), secretary; and Mariah Giardina (MS Environmental Science and Policy), communications and outreach officer.

BBQ May 6: We will be holding our second end-of-the-year barbecue at Kiwanis Park on May the 6th in order to celebrate all the accomplishments of our graduate student community, to toast to the end of the academic year, and to enjoy the warmth of a long spring afternoon in the company of friends. Look for our invitation sent through the student listserv or email for more information.

Thanks to everyone that participated in and contributed to GSO this year. We couldn't have come this far without you. And very special thanks to our wonderful dean, Ramona Mellott, who has gone out of her way to help and support us.

Not a step backwards; always onwards!

See you on May 6!
