Awards and Honors

Helen Bothwell (PhD Biology) received a NSF biotec GK-12 STEM Fellowship. The fellowship is $30k including tuition and health insurance. It is a partnership between fellows and local secondary school teachers to bring hands-on biotechnology into the classrooms and to get children excited about careers in science, math, engineering, and technology.

Elizabeth Cartwright (M Administration) has been selected as a 2012 Arizona Political Leaders Fellow at the Center for Progressive Leadership. The Arizona Political Leaders Fellowship is a nine-month, part-time leadership development program for progressive activists, non-profit organizers, elected officials, candidates etc.

Simon Chief (MEd Educational Leadership, Educational Foundations) has been a Gates Millennium Scholarship Recipient since 2005. With the scholarship he has received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and in Hotel and Restaurant Management from NAU and is now pursing a graduate degree in Educational Foundations. Chief also mentors undergraduate Gates Millenium Scholars at NAU.

Hesham Elnagar (MA Sustainable Communities) was awarded the 2012 United States Department of State Critical Language Institute Scholarship (Arabic).

Ryan Fitch (PhD Forest Science) received an Achievement Rewards for College Students (ARCS) Scholarship Award for 2012-2013 from the ARCS Foundation.

Tabitha Graves (PhD Forest Science) has accepted the David H. Smith Conservation Research post-doctoral fellowship. She will be stationed at Colorado State University to work on improving monitoring for grizzly bears and other species. Her work will involve ways to combine different datasets (e.g., genetics and observations of marked animals) and also optimize spatial sampling to get the most precise data for the least cost.

Brenda Harrop (PhD Biology) received an Achievement Rewards for College Students (ARCS) Scholarship Award for 2012-2013 from the ARCS Foundation.

Marvin Jim (MA Counseling) received several awards in 2011 and 2012. In 2012, he was awarded the Seven Stars Merit Scholarship by the American Indian College Fund and the American Indian Graduate Center Fellowship. In 2011, he received the American Indian Education Foundation Scholarship, Association on American Indian Affairs Scholarship, the American Indian Graduate Center Fellowship, and the Indian Health Career Award.

Lucy Kerhoulas (PhD Biology) received an Achievement Rewards for College Students (ARCS) Scholarship Award for 2012-2013 from the ARCS Foundation.

Louis (Jamie) Lamit (PhD Biology) received an Achievement Rewards for College Students (ARCS) Scholarship Award for 2012-2013 from the ARCS Foundation.

Benjamin McClendon (MA English, Creative Writing) won the ½ K prize for his poem "Jimmy," to be published in a forthcoming issue of the journal Indiana Review.

Theresa McHugh (PhD Biology) received an Achievement Rewards for College Students (ARCS) Scholarship Award for 2012-2013 from the ARCS Foundation.

Marco Meier (MA Pre-doctoral Clinical Health Psychology) received an external grant of supplies and software in the amount of $10,000 from Applied Neuroscience, Inc. for the conduct of his master's thesis entitled, "LORETA Neurofeedback and Spatial Cognition in Healthy Participants."

Cassandra Rivas (MS Environmental Science and Policy) has been named a 2012-13 Wyss Scholar for the Conservation of the American West by the Wyss Foundation.

Anthony Rothfork (EdD Curriculum and Instruction) received a $2,000 award from the Arizona Council of Administrators of Special Education (AZ-CASE) to help him continue his education at NAU.

Katie Sauerbrey (MS Environmental Science and Policy) has been named a 2012-13 Wyss Scholar for the Conservation of the American West by the Wyss Foundation.

Shelley Slick-Hummon (MEd Educational Leadership) won the Scottsdale Charros Teacher of the Year Award for Pima Elementary (Scottsdale, AZ),  where she is a 4th grade teacher. 

Sasha Stortz (MS Environmental Science and Policy) has been named a 2012-13 Wyss Scholar for the Conservation of the American West by the Wyss Foundation.

Robert Strahan (PhD Forest Science) received an Achievement Rewards for College Students (ARCS) Scholarship Award for 2012-2013 from the ARCS Foundation.

Amber Wilson (MS Environmental Science and Policy) has been named a 2012-13 Wyss Scholar for the Conservation of the American West by the Wyss Foundation.

J. Judson Wynne (PhD Biology) was awarded the Explorers Club Exploration Award (2011) and the National Speleological Society International Exploration Award (2011) for his work on "Relict Species and Invasion Ecology of Caves, Rapa Nui (Easter Island)."
