Check out this new course brought to you by the Department of Politics and International Affairs! Starting this upcoming Fall 2013 semester, Environmental Injustice through Film will be available for students to take. Taught by Dr. John Hultgren, this course looks will consider complex questions through films that highlight different aspects of the human/nature relationship, and readings that will help us critically engage with the films. Some issues that may be covered in this course include:
- Agriculture and migrant workers
- Indigeneity and “wilderness”
- Colonialism and natural resource extraction
- Toxic chemicals and race
- The enclosure of the commons
- Industrial food production and animal rights
Films used to demonstrate these issues will include: Avatar, The Milagro Beanfield War, Fast Food Nation, There Will Be Blood, and Men with Guns (among other fiction and non-fiction works)
The course will be offered Mon/Wed 9:10-10:25am and film screenings will be on Fridays online.
