    The purpose of the campus sustainability awards is to recognize those who have enhanced the culture of sustainability on the NAU campus and surrounding community.     NAU Sustainability Course Directory Has Been Launched

    The NAU Office of Sustainability is excited to introduce the NAU Sustainability Course Directory – a new online database system for all the courses from any department that are focused on sustainability or simply have a sustainability component in them. Both undergraduate and graduate students can now enjoy a constantly updated list of classes that cover a wide range of topics related to environmental, cultural, economic, and social sustainability.     The NAU Office of Sustainability is excited to introduce the NAU Sustainability Course Directory – a new online database system for all the courses from any department that are focused on sustainability or simply have a sustainability component in them.     It’s Time to Leave Green!

    Now that the end of the semester is rapidly approaching, many students who live in the residence halls will be moving out in a few short days. What do you do with those perfectly good items? Don’t throw them away! Donate your unwanted goods and Leave Green! Donation bins can be found in the main lobby of your building or in the clubhouse/office for the apartment areas. Make sure the food you donate has not expired. We cannot accept futon mattresses, mattress toppers, or hangers. The clothing, furniture, book, and household items donations will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters. The non-perishable food donations will benefit Sunshine Rescue Mission. Since the…

    Green is the New Black Eco Fashion Show is Back for 2014!

    Do you have dreams of being a clothing designer or working in fashion? Does thrift shopping strike your fancy? If so, apply to be a designer or stylist for the second annual Eco Fashion Show! Green is the New Black, the Eco Fashion Show sponsored by Housing and Residence Life, will once again kick off NAU’s Earth Week events. One of the things that make this event so special is that the designers and stylists create their runway looks completely out of reused materials.     AHESC Presentation Proposals Due December 6th

    Have you heard of AASHE? The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education is the premier organization for helping you as a student, faculty, or staff find ways to make your school more sustainable. They hold annual conferences across the country to help individuals share and discuss best practices for incorporating sustainability into higher education. This year we’re having the first ever regional conference at the University of Arizona March 24-25. Participate in the Arizona Higher Education Sustainability Conference (AHESC) by submitting a presentation proposal by December 6th (guidelines: http://ahesc.org/program).     National Sustainability Day Recap

    Northern Arizona University celebrated National Sustainability Day on October 23rd by engaging the campus community on several different levels of conservation behaviors on and off campus. Dining Services conducted a waste audit to bring awareness to food waste and national hunger stats, Green NAU Energy Initiatives (GNEI) encouraged water and energy conversation with Strive for 5, 5 minute showers and Be Bold Go Cold, use the cold setting when doing your laundry to save energy. Housing and Resident Life Eco-Reps shared tips on how to have a more sustainable Halloween holiday this year.

    Campus Sustainability Innovation Challenge

    Have you ever had an idea that could make NAU a more sustainable place? Well, the Campus Sustainability Innovation Challenge is definitely for you. The NAU Campus Sustainability Innovation Challenge, presented by the NAU International House and the Green NAU Energy Initiative, gives students the chance to propose improvements to sustainability on the NAU campus through their original ideas. The Green NAU Energy Initiative will mentor the winning student to develop a proposal.     Summer Book Review: Karl Weber’s “Food, Inc.”

    Gaining infamy in 2008, the film Food, Inc. exposed the dark secrets of the American Food Industry. Director Robert Kenner showcases first hand accounts of animal cruelty, environmental degradation, food-borne illness, and public health concerns via the testimonies of farmers, industry workers, consumers advocates, and people like you. Working with Kenner, author and editor Karl Weber released the participant guide Food, Inc. This film to book companion became a New York Times Best Seller including contributions from experts like Eric Schlosser, Michael Pollan, Anna Lappe, and many more.
