On December 4, 2017, President Trump, Interior Secretary Zinke, and Agriculture Secretary Perdue announced a dramatic reduction in size and protection for Bears Ears National Monument. Our scientist sign-on letter calls for a reversal of the anticipated decision, and supports the language in President Obama’s presidential proclamation of Dec. 28, 2016 that established Bears Ears National Monument. Visit the sign-on letter website here. Please read the letter and, if you wish to, sign.
If you have other colleagues who might be interested in signing on, please feel free to share. There are many groups and organizations voicing their opinion on Bears Ears right now, and we hope that this will help to amplify the voice of scientists and managers in that conversation.
Tom Sisk, Director of the Landscape Conservation Initiative at Northern Arizona University, compiled all signatures on Monday Dec 4, and sent digital and paper copies to President Trump and Secretaries Zinke and Purdue soon thereafter. We will continue to add names to the letter and a copy of the letter and list of signatories can be found here.
Know that your signature will be valuable, even if received after initial release of the letter.
