NAUreads asks all first-year students to read the same book and encourages students to participate in conversations about the book. This provides all our first year students with a common experience as they begin their educational journey. Students can use the book to initiate conversations and build community with their new classmates, roommates, and faculty. The program includes opportunities to participate in:
- Book club discussions with faculty and staff
- Author presentations
- Film series related to the books central themes and issues
- Lectures on topics related to the book
- Class discussion based on the book
2012 Book Selection
NAUreads is excited to announce the 2012 selection, The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates, by Wes Moore.
The 2012 selection The Other Wes Moore is the story of two kids with the same name, living in the same city. Both boys grew up in similar neighborhoods, had difficult childhoods, were fatherless, hung out on the streets, and ran into trouble with the police. At each stage of their young lives they came across similar moments of decision, yet their choices and the people in their lives would lead them to astonishingly different destinies: One grew up to be a Rhodes Scholar, decorated combat veteran, White House Fellow, and business leader. The other is serving a life sentence in prison for felony murder. This is the inspiring story of two boys, the choices they made, and the journey of a generation.
First Year students will be given a complimentary copy of the book at Orientation. Parents and the NAU community may purchase a copy at the NAU Bookstore.
