Homework Assignment 7

The following questions pertain to the mirror fugue "Contrapunctus XII" from the Art of Fugue. You may recall listening to this fugue in the first week as an illustration of the contrapuntal operator known as "melodic inversion." The original fugue (12a) was identified as the Rectus (right-side-up) while the mirror (12b) was identified as the Inversus (up-side-down). In this quiz we ask the same seven questions of each fugue. In other words, there are two answers for each question: the first answer pertaining to the right-side-up version of the fugue, and the second answer pertaining to the upside-down version. The first box applies to the Rectus while the second applies to the Inversus.

You may wish to review the online analysis of these mirror fugues before answering these questions. If you have inserted the Art of Fugue CD, you can also listen while following the score. This would be especially helpful in determining the key at various points. For those who would like to refer to the music in hand, you can also print a copy of the score.
