In 2005 Luiz Henrique Xavier, an award-winning composer from Brazil, contacted me about the possibility of translating the "passion fugues" into Portuguese. His initiative has inspired additional efforts by many others in consequence of which nearly half of Book 1 has been translated into Portuguese and Spanish. Subsequent translations have been made into Farsi, Polish, Japanese, and Mandarin. This is a work that I have enjoyed tremendously, as it has brought me into correspondence with wonderful people from interesting places. I have also learned a great deal about the technological aspects of rendering various scripts into Unicode, not to mention a profound appreciation of the inner logic and aesthetic beauty of phonetic alphabets and idiographic symbols.
If you are interested in translating a fugue essay, I encourage you to write to me at tim.smith (insert @ symbol here) nau.edu. Although I can't guarantee that I'll be up to the technological challenge of every script and language, I will do my best. So I encourage you to pick out one fugue that interests you, try your hand at it, and let's see how it goes. Please understand that this is a volunteer effort. As with my own work, you can expect no reward other than the satisfaction of having served our common heritage, a job well-done, and an occasional email from somebody out there who will take the time to thank you personally.

Alfonso Sebastián Alegre
Nacido en Zaragoza en 1974, realizó sus estudios de piano (Ma Pilar Armijo) y clavicémbalo (José Luis González Uriol) en el Conservatorio Superior de Música de esa ciudad. Prosigue su formación en el Conservatoire National Supérieur de París, donde se especializa en fortepìano y clavicordio con Patrick Cohen y se inicia en la dirección de orquesta con Scott Sandmeier y Claire Levacher. Ha seguido cursos de perfeccionamiento con Jan Willem Jansen, Gustav Leonhardt, Lars-Ulrik Mortensen, Jacques Ogg y Paul Badura-Skoda, entre otros. Es miembro del grupo vocal e instrumental Los Músicos de Su Alteza, que, dirigido por Luis Antonio González Marín, se dedica principalmente a la recuperación y difusión del repertorio histórico español. También ha colaborado con la orquesta barroca Al Ayre Español, dirigida por Eduardo López Banzo y el ensemble La Tempestad, dirigido por Silvia Márquez. Fue laureado en la modalidad de clave y órgano del Concurso Permanente de Jóvenes Intérpretes 96-97 que organiza Juventudes Musicales de España. Como solista o en diversas formaciones, ha actuado en festivales y salas (Ambronay, Fribourg, Vieux-Lyon, Konzerthaus de Berlín, Palais des Beaux-Arts de Bruselas, Palacio Euskalduna, Daroca, Aranjuez, Música-Musika de Bilbao, Granada...). Ha realizado una grabación patrocinada para el INAEM en la que interpreta repertorio histórico español. También ha grabado un CD para el sello Verso con música de Juan de Aragüés como miembro de la Orquesta de la Academia de Música antigua de la Universidad de Salamanca, y otro con música para dos claves de Luigi Boccherini en colaboración con la clavecinista Silvia Márquez, con quien forma dúo estable. Además, con Los Músicos de Su Alteza, ha grabado el Miserere de José de Nebra (para el sello discográfico del Festival de Aranjuez) y La divina Filotea (auto sacramental de Calderón con música de Nebra), así como un disco con Villancicos de Joseph Ruiz Samaniego y la ópera Amor aumenta el valor de Nebra, ambos para el sello francés Alpha. En la actualidad, y desde 1999, es profesor de clave y bajo continuo en el Conservatorio Profesional de Música de Salamanca. |

Jesús Alberto López Alvarez
Spanish Translation bm Book I |Shockwave|pdf| Nació el 22 de febrero de 1982 en Hermosillo, Sonora, México. Estudió piano en EDIMUS (Escuela de Disciplinas Musicales) con la profra. Consuelo Soria (1996-1999) y con la Dra. Leticia Teresita Varela Ruiz (1996-2001). Culminó sus estudios de Licenciatura en Ejecución Pianística (Agosto del 2006) en la NAU (Northern Arizona University), graduandose con honores Cum Laude. Tomó clases magistrales con el Dr. Frank Scott, Rita Borden, Jeffrey Swan, Francisco Alvarez y John Furgeson. Es bilingüe en inglés-español. Habla francés básico y tiene conocimientos empíricos de latín. Ha trabajado como maestro de órgano y canto gregoriano elemental en el Seminario Mayor de Hermosillo; como maestro de piano en EDIMUS y en la NAU Preparatory School of Music, así como de manera particular. Ha laborado como pianista acompañante en el Instituto Schiller de Sonora (Marzo a Mayo de 1999); en la NAU y de manera particular. Estudió clases particulares de composición musical con el compositor y maestro Dr. Bruce Reiprich. Asimismo, ha obtenido diversos tipos de becas como la de la Comisión Sonora-Arizona y la de la NAU Bookstore. Pertenece a la Golden Key International Honor Society desde Enero del 2006. |

I also direct the Studio Mandora, where I write and produce music for film, video and dance. Recently, I wrote the music for "Underground Game" (Jogo subterrâneo) a Brazilian film screened in important festivals, including Palm Springs, USA; San Sebastian, Spain; and Havana, Cuba. This score was awarded Best Music for film in the 27 Havana Film Festival, in December 2005. This score and the score for another Brazilian film, Feliz Ano Velho, were released in CD. With my experience as composer and teacher, I have taught in different institutions in Brazil focusing in subjects that discuss the structural aspects of music, its meanings in the context of our history and culture, and the interaction between music and other languages like film, dance and poetry. |

I was born in São Paulo, Brazil in 1958. I am a composer, a flutist and professor of theory, analysis and composition at the State University of Campinas - Unicamp, in Brazil. From 1980 to 1989 I lived in New York and studied at the Aaron Copland School of Music, Queens College, CUNY, where I took my B.A. and M.A. There, I had the opportunity to study with great teachers, among them, Carl Schachter, George Perle, Leo Kraft, Bruce Saylor and Henry Burnett. All of them have been a source of inspiration throughout my musical life.
I was born in the last day of the first half of 1974, in Barra Mansa, RJ, Brazil. I am grandson and son of piano teachers: my grandmother was taught by her father to play in silent movies sessions at his own movie theater. I learned to read quarter notes before learning the alphabet. I studied piano for eleven years; unfortunately I was forced to quit because I had to move out to the capital in order to attend the College of Pharmacy. I took my degree at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro in 1997.
