Friedrich Wilhelm Zachau 1663-1712

Zachau became organist at the Liebfrauenkirche in Halle in 1684, the year before his famous student Handel's birth. Handel began studying with Zachau at between seven and nine years of age; copies survive in Handel's hand of works by Zachau, Froberger, Kerll, Strungk, and many other 17th century composers. Handel's esteem for his master is evidenced by his 1710 visit and contributions to Zachau's widow after 1712. Zachau's music consists of cantatas and pieces for the organ.
