What should be in rubrics?

Rubrics should include:

  • clear and well-thought out criteria that distinguish good work from poor work;
  • levels of achievement (e.g., good vs. excellent, 3 vs. 4);
  • descriptions of criteria at each level of achievement;
  • consequences of performing at a specific level (e.g., typos and grammar errors are distracting to the reader);
  • input from students when possible and realistic.
