Support Services: Liberal Studies Program
Liberal Studies is designed to provide students with a coherent program through which they develop the essential skills necessary for citizenship. Thirty-five credits of Liberal Studies courses are required of all undergraduate students seeking their first baccalaureate degree from NAU. These Liberal Studies requirements consist of Foundation Requirements and Distribution courses. Courses must be selected from the approved list of Liberal Studies courses and must be outside of the academic discipline of the student's major, as determined by course prefix. However, a student may use a course to meet both Liberal Studies and minor requirements. Key resources:
- Information on the submission and review of new Liberal Studies courses.
- The University's new Diversity Requirement may be fulfilled by designated Liberal Studies, or by designated courses in a major or minor. For more information on the Diversity Requirement, see the Ethnic and Global Diversity Requirements Web page.
- The Liberal Studies Program is administered by the Liberal Studies Committee, a Faculty Senate committee with two voting representatives elected from each college. See the list of members on the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies Web site.
