Peer Review

This is a tutorial that introduces the concept of peer review. In this tutorial, students can learn the rationale behind peer review, as well as the benefits they can expect to garner from review activities. Within the tutorial, there are explanation of how to use the reviewing tools in Microsoft Word for use in electronic review, and general guidelines for responding to peers' writing regardless of the mode of peer review (face-to-face, in-class, or electronically).

The goal of this tutorial it to help you understand the value of giving and receiving effective peer reviews. But most importantly, this tutorial is intended to demonstrate that each student writer has a valuable perspective to offer his or her peers and teach that student to effectively relay their perspective during peer review. In addition, writing as a process is emphasized.

The tutorial consists of several sections, which can be accessed with the navigation to the left. The first section, Reasons for Peer Review, gives an overview the theoretical rationale behind peer reviews in order to explicitly introduce students to the purposes of peer review.

The second section, Functional Skills, demonstrates how to work the reviewing tools in Microsoft Word.

Making Marginal Comments discusses what makes a comment effective and contains an activity for students. Likewise, Responding to Questions discusses what constitutes an effective response to peer review guide questions and includes a student or class activity.
