PowerPoint Presentations

Giving oral presentations is a task that you will encounter often during your education and most likely in your career as well. One of the most useful tools for creating a visual aid for your presentation is the use of Microsoft PowerPoint, and other similar programs.

This module is intended to illustrate some do's and don'ts of PowerPoint presentations in terms of design, content, and organization. Click on the link below to go through a sample presentation, and learn about the conventions of effective PowerPoint presentations.

PowerPoint Presentation Conventions Tutorial (ppt)

Additionally, here is a handout detailing general oral presentation guidelines (.doc), whether or not you use a visual aid.

When you have completed going through the tutorial, put your new knowledge to the test, and redesign the PowerPoint presentation, making sure to follow the conventions discussed in the tutorial. (Note: You will need to download the presentation and save it to your computer, and then open it in the PowerPoint program. Do this by right-clicking on the link above and selecting "Save Target As").
