Biomes occur in great variety all over the world and are usually recognized by their dominant life forms. Find information on a biome other than the coniferous forest around Flagstaff, AZ.

You will probably need to look in more than one place to find all the information you need to do this activity. Use the textbook, the web, university or public libraries, or an encyclopedia if they help.

1. Find a particular site in a biome. So that each person in the class reports on a different biome and site, post the name of the biome and its location to the class newsgroup. Look at a "cleaner" version of the list, with a slight delay in posting.

Note: If you have trouble getting to the newsgroup, check the settings in your browser. 1) For Netscape Communicator, on the menu bar click on Edit, Preferences. Then in Mail & Groups, click on Groups Server. Make sure usenet.nau.edu is your Discussion groups (news) server. 2) For Netscape Navigator, on the menu bar click on Options, Mail & News Preferences. In the Preferences window, click on the Servers tab. At the bottom of the window, Make sure usenet.nau.edu is your News (NNTP) server. 3) For Internet Explorer, on the menu bar click on Go, News. Follow the directions to set up your news account. Enter usenet.nau.edu for your news server. Subscribe to nau.classes.s99.bio.226-02.

If you are the first person to post that biome and location, report on it. If someone else has already posted that biome and location, pick another and post it. Do not duplicate biome and location. Pick your biome and location early.

To post the name of your biome and location, click on the instructor's message with the subject, "Environ Variation: Biomes." Reply to this message by choosing "Reply to Group." Delete the original text in the subject window (in this case, "Environ Variation: Biomes") and replace it with the name of your biome and location. Send the message.

2. Describe the identifying features of this biome: its dominant species, its characteristic temperature and moisture regimes. What type of soil is associated with this biome? What source(s) did you use for reference?

3. Find a picture of this biome on the web and enter its URL.

4. What are the identifying features of the coniferous forest biome around Flagstaff, AZ.: its dominant species, its characteristic temperature and moisture regimes? What type of soil is found in this biome? What source(s) did you use for reference?
