1. Competition between individuals may be direct (interference competition) or indirect (exploitation competition).

a) What are interference competition and exploitation competition, and how do they differ?

b) Describe an example of interference competition and an example of exploitation competition.

2. Ricklefs' story of the parasitoid wasps in the genus Aphytis (pg 433) is a reminder of the two grain beetles described on pg 338. How does the description of the grain beetles suggest an explanation of the history of Aphytis in the various habitats of California?

3. Both barnacles and lizards showed asymmetry of competition.

a) Explain how competition was asymmetric in each of these populations.

b) Which of the lizard species was similar to which of the barnacles? Explain.
