The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association (NCA) has extended Northern Arizona University’s accreditation through 2017-2018. The comprehensive evaluation team, which conducted a site visit in October 2007, found that the University fulfills all the criteria for continued accreditation. Recognizing significant accomplishments, progress, and/or practices, the team concluded its report by commending Northern Arizona University for:
- its commitment to student success and the outstanding work done through cross-University partnerships by the Gateway Student Success Center;
- a strong and pervasive sense of engagement with multiple external constituencies for which extended education activities are central;
- careful and long-term management of its fiscal, capital, and human resources to achieve its strategic plan; and
- the focus on student learning advanced by the Cline Library staff.
Northern Arizona University will ensure that opportunities for improvement that were identified through the self-study and evaluation are pursued by integrating follow-up into the on-going university strategic planning.
NAU’s self-study process utilized a three-tiered organizational strategy, guided by the five criteria used to evaluate higher education institutions to produce a self-study report. The self-study report reflects the collaborative efforts of the Steering Committee and the five criteria focused task forces. A campus-wide online course entitled, NCA Self-Study was created for the campus community to become familiar with the accreditation process, to become eligible to win great prizes, and to be a resource for the site team conducting the comprehensive evaluation of Northern Arizona University.
Universities and colleges in the United States obtain accreditation from non-governmental bodies that are recognized by the U. S. Secretary of Education as being reliable authorities to evaluate the quality of higher education. The North Central Association (NCA) is one of six regional associations recognized by the Department of Education that accredit institutions of higher education. The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association (NCA) (312) 263-0456) accredits Northern Arizona University while more specialized organizations accredit particular degree programs. NAU has eighteen accredited degree programs that are reviewed on a regular basis by specialized accrediting bodies.
