Student of Lotti and Gasparini, Marcello lived and worked in Venice after 1711. Marcello was highly educated and respected in that city, where he served on the Council of Forty. His works include: stage works, oratorios, cantatas, madrigals, canzone and sonatas. Bach's clavier concerto (BWV 974) is an adaptation of an oboe concerto in D minor which was long believed to have been composed by Benedetto Marcello but is now known to have been the creation of his brother, Alessandro (1684-1750).
