REDCap at NAU

What is REDCap?

REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture) is a free, secure, web-based application designed to support data capture for research studies. The system was developed by a multi-institutional consortium initiated at Vanderbilt University. Data collection is customized for each study or clinical trial by the research team with guidance from the of of the VP of Research and ITS Support Staff. REDCap is designed to comply with HIPAA regulations. REDCap is not 21 CFR Part 11 compliant.

REDCap includes a full audit trail, recording all operations on the data, including viewing and exporting. The audit log records operation, date and time, and the user performing the operation, permitting review of the audit trail as necessary.

REDCap enforces data integrity protection by design. Data is compartmentalized with access to specific datasets being controlled by the principle investigator.

REDCap also provides a powerful tool for creating and managing surveys in your web browser. Collect anonymous responses or track and identify responses from survey participants by:

REDCap provides the ability to export data for direct analysis by Microsoft Excel, SAS, STATA, R, SPSS, or other analysis programs.

Accessing REDCap

All researchers at NAU that wish to use REDCap for managing data or REDCap Survey for collecting study participants' responses online, may request a REDCap account.

REDCap is available on two servers, www2.nau.edu (for low risk data) and jefferson.ucc.nau.edu (for high risk data that inludes personal identifiable information [PII] or personal health information [PHI]). Researchers learning REDCap or that are collecting anonymous survey information may use the www2.nau.edu server. All individuals with a valid NAU uid and password may use the redcap server at www2.nau.edu/redcap-p by simply going to that web address and entering their NAU credentials.

For training information, you may go to the following page: https://www2.nau.edu/redcap-p/index.php?action=training

REDCap may also be used on mobile devices for data collection. For documentation on this go to Mobile REDCap

NOTE: When requesting an account on our Jefferson server for working with high risk (class 3 & 4 ) or CUI data, access will be granted through the Regulatory Compliance Office. First, anyone without an NAU logon ID must obtain one. This may be done through the Solution Center at NAU. With a valid logon ID, the appropriate form requesting access must be filled out and an email should be sent to David Faguy (david.faguy@nau.edu), or to Christine Kirby (christine.kirby@nau.edu) if with SHERC/CHER, requesting the access. The forms are available below.
