Participant Terms of Service
As a participant in a research study conducted in part or in whole by the Wearable Informatics Lab (Winfree Lab), your exact terms of service will be determined by your consent to participate in the research study. You may choose not to participate in this study without penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled.
As a participant, we will access our Fitbit data as supplied by Fitbit.com through a secure connection between Fitbit and Norther Arizona University (NAU). This is done using an Application Programming Interface (API). Efforts will be made to keep your study-related information confidential. The activity monitor will report activity measures to the Fitbit cloud server. While these data will not be stored with your name or any personal identifiers, we cannot ensure complete confidentiality of the Fitbit server. Data from the Fitbit server will be stored at NAU, and eventually compressed or removed from the Fitbit server following their outlined agreement.
There may be circumstances where study information must be released. For example, personal information regarding your participation in this study may be disclosed if required by state law.
Also, your records may be reviewed by the following groups:
• Northern Arizona University Institutional Review Board, and the Institutional Review Board of any other participating organization (per your specific study).
• The sponsor supporting the study and their agents or study monitors
The principal investigator (Kyle N. Winfree), and other study personnel will have access to the confidential study-related records that identify you by name. Absolute confidentiality cannot be guaranteed. However, to reduce the risk of a breach in confidentiality, you will be assigned a study ID upon enrollment. Your name will only be linked to the study in this Consent form and one other document that will have your name and study ID together. This form will be kept locked in a separate file, independent of all the study records and will be destroyed upon completion of the study in full. All other records that contain data collected from you will have your study ID, and will also be kept in secured documents on password protected computers. Results from this study may be publish in relevant scientific journals or presented at regional, national, or international meetings and will not contain any identifying information. Pictures taken during the study will be used following the permissions you agree to on the signature page.
As a collaborating researcher, you agree to include to the level appropriate, members of the Wearable Informatics Lab who were involved in projects that made use of the WearWare TK (https://www2.nau.edu/wearable-icp/index.php/wearware-tk/) or WearWare Collect (http://wearware.egr.nau.edu) systems. This may include data collection, analysis, or preparation of manuscripts. Any collaborator listed under any Institutional Review Board documentation that also includes Dr. Winfree or his students, you must abide by all terms of privacy and protocols listed in that documentation.
Note, if you are using WearWare TK without involving members of the Wearable Informatics Lab, Dr. Winfree, or his students, we ask that you cite us as a courtesy, but do not require co-authorship. Please email Dr. Winfree to ask exactly which publication may be best based on your research activities.
