DUE: 29-Jan-99. Work sent after this date will receive a grade of zero.
1. The exchange of oxygen between an animal and its environment takes advantage of diffusion, and, therefore, conserves energy. As an example of this adaptation, explain how hemoglobin facilitates this organism-environment interaction.

2. Homeostasis works by negative feedback.

a) In what way is this feedback negative?

b) Give an example (not involving hemoglobin) of how negative feedback helps a particular organism achieve homeostasis.

3. Microhabitats exemplify environmental heterogeneity.

a) Describe a habitat (not one of those dealt with in the textbook) and three microhabitats it contains.

b) What pattern of temperature would you expect to observe in the habitat and each of its three microhabitats in a 24 hour period? Explain how the patterns in the microhabitats are different from, but related to, those in the larger habitat and each other.
