Mitochondrial DNA

Mitochondria contain their own DNA (mtDNA), separate from the DNA of the cell's chromosomes. Mitochondria are parts of the cell that produce the energy that the cell uses to do its work and is passed to offspring in the egg. Since the mutation rate is easily measured, mtDNA is a powerful tool for tracking the lineage of species back thousands of generations.
