On the floor of one ring of pillars at Göbekli Tepe lay the remains of a portal—perhaps a symbolic entrance into the supernatural realm seemingly symbolized by the animals carved across the site. Many of the animals were carnivores, including the fox depicted on the rear pillar at top right.
