Hemoglobin Sequence

Depicted below is the sequence of RNA bases in the transcript of the human beta-globin gene. The letters in magenta are the two introns which are excised from the transcript in the maturation process resulting in mRNA. The letters in blue are the bases at either end of the introns (GU...AG) which are used as "endpoints" in the splicing process. The first AUG is translated as methionine but that amino acid is removed from the polypeptide chain and the next amino acid, valine, is the first amino acid in the mature polypeptide chain.
