Hemoglobin Sequence
Depicted below is the sequence of RNA bases in
the
transcript of the human beta-globin gene. The letters in magenta are
the two
introns which are excised from the transcript in the maturation
process resulting in mRNA. The letters in blue are the bases at either end of
the introns (GU...AG) which are used as "endpoints" in the splicing process. The
first
AUG is translated as
methionine but that amino acid is
removed from the polypeptide chain and the next amino acid,
valine, is
the first amino acid in the mature polypeptide chain.
