Viruses cause many diseases in humans and in other organisms.

1. What is the difference between an RNA virus and a DNA virus?

2. How does a virus "attack" an organism and what immune defenses does the organism bring to bear on the invading virus?

3. After Reading No. 24 in the course pack, there is a summary table of viruses which infect humans. In addition, there are viruses which attack bacteria (bacteriophage) and which attack plants (e.g., tobacco mosaic virus).

a) Pick a virus which has not already been listed by someone else in the assignment database. List the specific virus (not a family of viruses) in the assignment database.

b) Is the virus you picked a DNA or RNA virus? What source(s) did you use for reference?

c) What organisms does the virus infect?

d) What are the symptoms of the disease and the course of the disease, i.e., what is the probability of complete recovery?
