Description of Ostinato

Be able to describe ostinato, ground bass, passacaglia, chaconne processes in works of various style period. Ground (see p. 63 and p. 128), Chaconne (see p. 99 and Brahms, Sym. 4, IV), Passacaglia (see Bach Passacaglia in C minor).
Description of Variations

Be able to describe the differences between continuous variation and sectional variation processes. Be able to list variation procedures, potential constants and potential variables (see lists on info page). Be able to list a few works that illustrate continuous variations, sectional variations and developmental or metamorphic variations.
Description of Suite

Be able to describe the suite and discuss its origins. Describe the Baroque suite in detail. Be able to list and discuss as many as ten suite themes (subjects) and give an example for literature that illustrates each type of suite. Bear in mind that there are cases where variations and suite intersect.
