STATUS REPORT: Argemone arizonica G. B. Ownbey

Geographical range
A. Total Geographical range:
Endemic to Grand Canyon National Park, Coconino County, Arizona below the Kaibab Plateau. Previously only known from upper Roaring Springs Canyon between the footbridge at 6,000 feet and the Supai Tunnel at 6,800 feet along the North Kaibab Trail. It was noted as being on the "north and south walls of Grand Canyon" (Kearney and Peebles 1960, McDougall 1973), and has been relocated along the trails descending from the South Rim.
B. Specific occurrence in Grand Canyon National Park:
  • Between 2.7 and 3.0 miles below the trailhead of the North Kaibab Trail between 1,828 and 2,072m (6,000 and 6,800 feet) on the bottom two members of the Supai Sandstone formation. The population begins just past the first tunnel and ends 5 minutes above the sign that indicates the Redwall and Supai formation 36°N12'52.1"/112°W2'81.1".
  • Found just above the first rest/water stop and at the first switchback change after the first bathroom on the South Bright Angel Trail. The plants grew on north facing slopes between 1773 and 1801m (5,820 and 5,910 feet) and between the following coordinates: 36°N3'38.4"/ 112°W8'16.5" and 36°N3'38"/112°W8'21.7".
Areas searched without locating species:
The South Kaibab Trail was searched to an elevation of 1,639m (5,380 feet) on July 21, 2001, no A. arizonica was found.
