Review:
You learned about the Greek conception of the psyche, especially the realms governed by Apollo & Dionysus (with the aid of the Eumenides).
You celebrated the invention of the trial by jury system & with it the notion of due process. In the quest for justice, we appeal to principles, not to people.
We saw that people have long memories when they are traumatized. KLY waits 10 years to be revenged. How vain is the expectation that "time will heal all wounds" & people will forgot about my desperate act?
You know Aristotle's conceptions of mimesis & catharsis, & his formula for drama. You know that Greek tragic drama offered negative moral instruction.
We finally reached the end of the story of the House of Atreus, which began with AG sacrificing innocence to gain power. Orestes is the final result. He marries Hermione, the daughter of Helen & MEN. Orestes may not be a full fledged philosopher, but is a devotee of Apollo & hopes to justify his life, not on the field of battle & through violence, but in a court of justice.
This is the end of unit 10. We have 1 more unit on Greek theater.
Remember the paper you are doing on this topic will be due next week for
unit 11. See you next week.
