Reading:
Read:
-
Wilkie & Hurt: pp: 1-9 ("The Ancient World").
-
As you
read in Wilkie & Hurt you should also use a reference book like:
to learn
about names & concepts that you are unfamiliar with. You probably
know who Poseidon is, but look him up (p. 370). Since we are reading
about Troy, you should hi-lite the material on Poseidon about Troy: "For
a year Poseidon, with
Apollo & the mortal Aeacus, participated
in the construction of the walls of Troy. However, Laomedon
refused to give Poseidon the agreed salary . . . . That was
the origin of Poseidon's resentment against the Trojans." You can
now guess that in The Iliad Poseidon aids the Greeks against Troy.
I will not give you further specific directions to look-up terms or names,
but trust that you will do this so that you will better understand the
motives of various characters.
